HomeLight: Psychological Counseling for Children

Licensed Therapists conduct an assessment of each child upon their arrival at HomeLight. During this session, the therapist determines the mental health needs of the child and discusses the results with the parents. Ongoing individual and group therapy sessions focus on recovering from personal trauma, overcoming guilt and self-blame, decreasing fear and increasing self-esteem. Children with severe emotional and/or psychological problems are referred to specialty provider agencies as part of our program. Therapists use diverse strategies for high-risk behaviors, substance abuse, social and interpersonal skills, adolescent-specific issues, depression and other family dynamic issues, particularly those associated with homelessness. Peer groups are available as well as age-appropriate fun activities throughout the year including field trips, movies, social recreation and arts and crafts.
